    Diflucan belongs to a group of medicines called "antifungals". The active substance is fluconazole.

    Diflucan is used to treat fungal infections and to prevent Candida infections. The most common cause of yeast infections is a yeast called candida.

    Adults

    Your doctor may prescribe this medicine to treat the following yeast infections:

    • Cryptococcal meningitis - a mycotic brain infection
    • Coccidioidomycosis - a disease of the bronchopulmonary system
    • Infections caused by Candida that are found in the bloodstream, in organs (e.g. heart, lungs) or in the urinary tract

  2. What you need to know before taking Diflucan Do not take Diflucan

    • If you are allergic to fluconazole, other medicines you have used to treat fungal infections, or any of the other ingredients in this medicine (see section 6). Symptoms may include itching, reddening of the skin, or difficulty breathing
    • if you are taking astemizole, terfenadine (antihistamines used to treat allergies)
    • if you are taking cisapride (used to treat upset stomach)
    • if you are taking pimozide (used to treat mental disorders)
    • if you are taking quinidine (used to treat irregular heartbeat)
    • if you are taking erythromycin (antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections)
    • Warnings and precautions

      Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Diflucan:

    • if you have liver or kidney problems
    • if you have heart problems, including irregular heartbeat
    • if you have abnormal levels of potassium, calcium or magnesium in your blood
    • if you experience severe skin reactions (itching, reddening of the skin or difficulty breathing).
    • If there are signs of "adrenal insufficiency", the adrenal glands do not produce sufficient amounts of certain steroid hormones such as cortisol (chronic or prolonged fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain).

    Other drugs and diflucan

    Diflucan with food and drink

    You can take the medicine with or without food.

    Pregnancy, lactation and fertility

    If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to become pregnant, or plan to breastfeed, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

    You should not take Diflucan during pregnancy unless your doctor has prescribed it for you.

    You can continue breastfeeding after taking a single dose of Diflucan up to 150 mg. You must not breast-feed if you take Diflucan repeatedly.

  3. How to take diflucan

    Adults

    Genital candidiasis 150 mg as a single dose.
    Reduce recurrence of vaginal candidiasis 150 mg every three days for a total of 3 doses (day 1, 4 and 7) and then once a week for 6 months if there is a risk of infection.
    Mycosis of the skin and nail infections Depending on the site of infection, 50 mg once a day, 150 mg once a week, 300 mg to 400 mg once a week for 1 to 4 weeks (athlete's foot can take up to 6 weeks to treat the nail infection until the infected nail is replaced.
    Preventing candida infections (if your immune system is weak or not working properly) 200-400 mg once a day if there is a risk of infection.

    Young people between the ages of 12 and 17

    Always take the dose prescribed by your doctor (or the dose for adults or children).

    Children up to 11 years

    The maximum dose in children is 400 mg per day.

    The same dosage as described above, but administered once every 2 days. The maximum dose is 12 mg per kg body weight every 48 hours.

    Use in children under 2 weeks:

    The same dosage as described above, but administered once every 3 days. The maximum dose is 12 mg per kg body weight every 72 hours.

    Elderly

    The same dose should be used as in adults, unless you have kidney problems.

    Patients with kidney problems

    Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your kidney function.

    If you take more diflucan than you should

    If you take too many capsules together, it can cause problems. Tell your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
