What levothyroxine is and what it is used for
Synthroid, the active ingredient in levothyroxine, is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat diseases and dysfunction of the thyroid gland. It has the same effects as natural thyroid hormones.
Synthroid 25-200 micrograms is used
- to treat benign goiter in patients with normal thyroid function,
- to prevent the goiter from coming back after the operation,
- to replace natural thyroid hormones when the thyroid gland is not producing enough of them,
- to suppress tumor growth in patients with thyroid cancer.
Synthroid 25-100 micrograms is also used to balance thyroid hormone levels when the overproduction of hormones is treated with anti-thyroid drugs.
Synthroid 100/150/200 micrograms can also be used in functional tests of your thyroid.

What you need to know before you take Levothyroxine Clonmel Do not take Levothyroxine Clonmel
- if you are allergic to levothyroxine sodium or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
(listed in paragraph 6);
- if you have an untreated adrenal gland, pituitary dysfunction or excessive thyroid hormone production (thyrotoxicosis);
- if you have an acute heart disease (myocardial infarction or inflammation of the heart).

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking this medicine if you have any of the following heart conditions:
- insufficient blood supply to the blood vessels of the heart (angina pectoris),
- Heart failure,
- irregular and fast heartbeat,
- High blood pressure,
- Fat deposits in the arteries (arteriosclerosis).
You should be under medical supervision before you start taking Levothyroxine Clonmel or before a thyroid suppression test is done.
During treatment with Synthroid
You should have your thyroid hormone levels checked regularly. If you are not sure if any of these conditions affect you or if you are not undergoing treatment, talk to your doctor.
The doctor will determine whether there is an adrenal or pituitary dysfunction or a thyroid dysfunction with the resulting uncontrolled overproduction of thyroid hormones (thyroid autonomy). In fact, this condition must be kept under medical supervision before taking Synthroid or before performing a thyroid suppression test.
Ask your doctor
- if you are in or after the menopause; Because of the risk of osteoporosis, your doctor may need to check your thyroid function regularly.
- If you switch from one levothyroxine-containing medicine to another, the effect may be minor
different. Stricter monitoring and dose adjustment may be required.
- If you have epilepsy (seizures). Seizures were rarely reported initially
Levothyroxine treatment;
- before taking Orlistat (medicines used to treat obesity; closer monitoring and dose adjustment may be required);
- if you notice signs of psychotic disorders (closer surveillance and
Dose adjustment).
Other drugs and levothyroxine
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or may be taking other medicines.
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines, as Levothyroxine tablets may affect the way they work:
- Antidiabetic medicines (medicines that lower blood sugar):
Synthroid may reduce the effectiveness of the antidiabetic. As a result, you may need to do additional checks to determine your blood sugar levels, especially when you start treatment with Synthroid. .
- Coumarin derivatives, e.g. B. warfarin or phenprocoumon (medicines to prevent clotting
Blood):
Levothyroxine Clonmel may increase the effectiveness of these medicines, which may increase the risk of bleeding events, especially in the elderly. You may need to check your blood clotting levels regularly at the start of and during treatment with Levothyroxine Clonmel. The dose of the coumarin medicine may need to be adjusted during treatment with levothyroxine.
- Medicines to treat depression and other diseases, including amitriptyline,
Imipramine and dosulepine.
- Decongestant medicines such as phenylephrine or adrenaline (used to treat severe allergies).
- Digoxin used to treat heart problems including irregular heartbeat.
- Orlistat (medicine used to treat obesity).
Make sure you take the medicine at the recommended intervals if you need to take any of the following medicines:
- Medications to bind bile acids and to lower high cholesterol (e.g.
Cholestyramine or colestipol):
Make sure you take Synthroid 4-5 hours before these medicines, as these can block the absorption of Synthroid from the gut.
- Antacids (used to relieve indigestion), sucralfate (for stomach or intestinal ulcers), others
Aluminum-based medicines, ferrous medicines, calcium carbonate:
Make sure you take Levothyroxine Clonmel at least 2 hours before taking these medicines, otherwise they may reduce the effects of Levothyroxine Clonmel.
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines as they may reduce the effects of levothyroxine.
- Propylthiouracil (antithyroid medicine),
- Glucocorticoids (anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory drugs),
- Beta blockers (medicines to lower blood pressure, also used to treat heart problems),
- Sertraline (antidepressant),
- Chloroquine or proguanil (medicines to prevent or treat malaria),
- Medicines that activate some liver enzymes, such as barbiturates (sedatives, sleeping pills) or carbamazepine (anti-epileptic, which is also used to modify some types of pain and to control mood disorders);
- Estrogen-containing drugs for hormone replacement therapy and after the menopause or
to prevent pregnancy
- Sevelamer (phosphate binder for the treatment of patients with chronic renal failure),
- Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (anti-cancer drugs and anti-inflammatories).
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines as they may increase the effects of levothyroxine.
- Salicylates (medicines used to relieve pain and fever),
- Dicumarol (medicine to prevent blood clotting),
- high dose furosemide - 250 mg (diuretic),
- Clofibrate (lipid-lowering medicine),
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines, as these may affect the effectiveness of levothyroxine.
- Ritonavir, indinavir, lopinavir (protease inhibitors, medicines used to treat
HIV),
- Phenytoin (anti-epileptic).
Regular monitoring of thyroid hormone parameters may be necessary. Dosage adjustment of Synthroid may be necessary.
Tell your doctor if you are taking amiodarone (a medicine used to treat an irregular heartbeat), as this medicine can affect the functioning and activity of the thyroid gland.
If you need to do a test or diagnostic scan with iodinated contrast media, tell your doctor that you are taking levothyroxine, as a product may be injected that could affect your thyroid function.
Thyroid hormones should not be used for weight loss. Taking thyroid hormones will not affect your weight if your thyroid hormone levels are normal. Serious and life-threatening side effects can occur if you increase the dose without consulting your doctor.
Synthroid with food and drink
Tell your doctor if you eat soy products, especially if the amount varies. Soy products can reduce the absorption of Synthroid from the intestine. It may therefore be necessary to change the dosage of Synthroid.
pregnancy and breast feeding period
If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, planning to become pregnant, or plan to breast-feed, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
If you continue to take levothyroxine and are pregnant, tell your doctor as the dose may need to be adjusted.
If you have taken Synthroid with an antithyroid medicine to treat overproduction of thyroid hormones, your doctor will advise you to stop taking Synthroid if you become pregnant.
If you are breast-feeding, continue to take levothyroxine as directed by your doctor. The amount of medicine excreted in breast milk is so small that it has no effect on the baby.
Drive and use machines
No studies on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed. As levothyroxine is analogous to the natural thyroid hormone, Synthroid is not expected to impair the ability to drive and use machines.
- if you are allergic to levothyroxine sodium or any of the other ingredients in this medicine

How to take levothyroxine
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, contact your doctor.
Your doctor will determine the dose for you based on your laboratory tests and tests. In general, start with a low dose, which should be increased every 2 to 4 weeks until you have reached the single dose you are scheduled for. In the first few weeks of treatment, you will have to take a dose of laboratory tests to adjust the dose. If the child was born with hyperthyroidism, the doctor may recommend starting with a higher dose because a quick change is important. The recommended starting dose is 10 to 15 micrograms per kg body weight in the first 3 months. After that, the doctor will adjust the dose on an individual basis.
The following table shows the usual dose interval. A lower single dose may be sufficient.
- If you are an elderly patient,
- if you have heart problems
- if you have a severe or persistent decrease in thyroid function,
- when it weighs little or has a large goiter.

Infants can be given the full daily dose of Synthroid at least half an hour before the first meal of the day. Break up the tablet immediately before use, mix it with water and give the child another liquid. Always prepare the mixture for time to use it.
Duration of treatment
The duration of treatment may vary depending on the condition for which you are using Synthroid. Your doctor will therefore discuss the duration of treatment with you. Most patients should take Synthroid for life.
If you take more Levothyroxine Clonmel than you should
Seizures like fast heart rate, anxiety, restlessness or involuntary movements can occur if you take a higher dose than prescribed. Seizures can be an isolated incident in patients with a disorder that affects the neurological system, such as epilepsy. Symptoms of acute psychosis can occur in patients at risk for psychotic disorders. In this case, contact your doctor.
