1. What levothyroxine is and what it is used for

   Synthroid, the active ingredient in levothyroxine, is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat diseases and dysfunction of the thyroid gland. It has the same effects as natural thyroid hormones.

   Synthroid 25-200 micrograms is used

   • to treat benign goiter in patients with normal thyroid function,
   • to prevent the goiter from coming back after the operation,

     Synthroid 25-100 micrograms is also used to balance thyroid hormone levels when the overproduction of hormones is treated with anti-thyroid drugs.

     Synthroid 100/150/200 micrograms can also be used in functional tests of your thyroid.

2. What you need to know before you take Levothyroxine Clonmel Do not take Levothyroxine Clonmel

   • if you are allergic to levothyroxine sodium or any of the other ingredients in this medicine

     (listed in paragraph 6);

   • if you have an untreated adrenal gland, pituitary dysfunction or excessive thyroid hormone production (thyrotoxicosis);
   • if you have an acute heart disease (myocardial infarction or inflammation of the heart).

     Do not take Levothyroxine Clonmel with thyroid medication if you are pregnant (see section "Pregnancy and breast-feeding").

     Warnings and precautions

     Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking this medicine if you have any of the following heart conditions:

   • insufficient blood supply to the blood vessels of the heart (angina pectoris),
   • Heart failure,
   • irregular and fast heartbeat,
   • High blood pressure,
   • Fat deposits in the arteries (arteriosclerosis).

     You should be under medical supervision before you start taking Levothyroxine Clonmel or before a thyroid suppression test is done.

     During treatment with Synthroid

     You should have your thyroid hormone levels checked regularly. If you are not sure if any of these conditions affect you or if you are not undergoing treatment, talk to your doctor.

     The doctor will determine whether there is an adrenal or pituitary dysfunction or a thyroid dysfunction with the resulting uncontrolled overproduction of thyroid hormones (thyroid autonomy).    • Sevelamer (phosphate binder for the treatment of patients with chronic renal failure),
   • Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (anti-cancer drugs and anti-inflammatories).

     Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines as they may increase the effects of levothyroxine.

   • Salicylates (medicines used to relieve pain and fever),
   • Dicumarol (medicine to prevent blood clotting),
   • high dose furosemide - 250 mg (diuretic),
   • Clofibrate (lipid-lowering medicine),

     Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines, as these may affect the effectiveness of levothyroxine.

   • Ritonavir, indinavir, lopinavir (protease inhibitors, medicines used to treat

     HIV),

   • Phenytoin (anti-epileptic).

     Regular monitoring of thyroid hormone parameters may be necessary. Dosage adjustment of Synthroid may be necessary.

     Tell your doctor if you are taking amiodarone (a medicine used to treat an irregular heartbeat), as this medicine can affect the functioning and activity of the thyroid gland.

     If you need to do a test or diagnostic scan with iodinated contrast media, tell your doctor that you are taking levothyroxine, as a product may be injected that could affect your thyroid function.

     Thyroid hormones should not be used for weight loss. Taking thyroid hormones will not affect your weight if your thyroid hormone levels are normal. Serious and life-threatening side effects can occur if you increase the dose without consulting your doctor.

     Synthroid with food and drink

     Tell your doctor if you eat soy products, especially if the amount varies. Soy products can reduce the absorption of Synthroid from the intestine. It may therefore be necessary to change the dosage of Synthroid.

3. How to take levothyroxine

   Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, contact your doctor.

5. How to store levothyroxine

   Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
