Viagra does not make men happier
While drugs like Viagra can certainly help men regain their erections, they won't make them any happier, a new US study claims.
PDE5 inhibitors such as Viagra, which work by relaxing blood vessels, help tackle the physiological side of erectile dysfunction, or ED, but they don't address psychological causes of impotence, LiveScience reports.
The study, which examined 40 clinical trials, was published November 21 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
"It's simplistic to think that fixing an erection issue would solve relationship issues," said researcher Dr. Andrew Kramer of the University of Maryland Medical Center. "Happiness is very complicated. A lot of couples still need additional therapy."
Other issues affecting impotence include depression, anxiety, and relationship problems, as well as alcohol and drug use.
Three million Malaysian men may be suffering from erectile dysfunction
Malaysian men, as early as in their late 20s, are suffering from complete ED.
As many as three million Malaysian men today above the age of 40 may be suffering from complete erectile dysfunction (ED), according to a leading clinical andrologist
“I was involved in a research in 1996-1997 on ED and Malaysian men, and we found that 600,000 men above the age of 40 were suffering from complete ED,” Dr Mohd Ismail Mohd Tambi said in an exclusive interview with Astro AWANI.
Pakistan Taliban 'ban vulgar films, Viagra'
The Pakistani Taliban have warned shopkeepers in a popular market to stop selling "obscene films" and Viagra-style male potency pills.
Shopkeepers told AFP Monday that they found handwritten pamphlets containing the warnings after opening Saturday in Karkhano market on the edge of the northwestern city of Peshawar.
"Selling sex drugs, vulgar films and obscene movies are against Sharia," said copies of the pamphlet distributed in the name of Tehreek-e-Taliban Khyber.
"All those involved in this business are warned to quit this occupation and start a lawful business or face the consequences," it said.
Those who received the threatening letter spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity because of fear of Taliban reprisals.
Dozens of shops in Karkhano openly sell pornographic films and male potency tablets, according to witnesses.
The market borders the tribal district of Khyber, where fighting has recently intensified in a long-running Pakistan military operation against the Taliban and other Islamist militias on the Afghan border.
Shopkeepers selling music and films are routinely threatened across the northwest, where hundreds of DVD and CD shops have been bombed in the past by militants who deem their business un-Islamic.
At least 10 people were killed and 26 wounded Friday when a bomb exploded near a DVD shop in Kalaya, the main town of Orakzai tribal district.
Viagra is no help against heart failure: study
The erectile dysfunction drug commonly known as Viagra is no help against heart failure and should not be taken for it, according to research out Monday that contradicts previous, smaller studies.
Some early research had suggested the drug, which can increase blood flow to other parts of the body, might offer a benefit to people with diastolic heart failure in which the heart's lower chambers stiffen and cannot pump blood well, causing shortness of breath.
But the randomized study of 216 patients at 26 sites in North America showed that the drug, known as sildenafil, was no better than a placebo at improving exercise capability or clinical symptoms of heart disease.
Also, more patients taking the drug experienced serious adverse events than those who were given a placebo, leading researchers to urge doctors to stop prescribing it as an off-label treatment for people with heart disease.
"The results of our study were surprising and disappointing," said the study's lead author Margaret Redfield, professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
"There was a lot of anticipation around this study based on other research, and we were hoping to find something that would help these patients, as there are currently few options for treatment."
The median age of the patients studied was 69, and nearly half (48 percent) were women. The patients were tested for cardiovascular improvements after 24 weeks, but none could be seen.
During the study period, adverse events such as flushing and low blood pressure occurred more often in patients on sildenafil than in those on the placebo.
Also, six people in sildenafil group died before the end of the study, while there were no deaths in the placebo section.
The research was released at the American College of Cardiology's annual meeting in San Francisco and was published simultaneously in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
"There were more (but not significantly more) patients who withdrew consent, died, or were too ill to perform the cardiopulmonary exercise test in the sildenafil treatment group, potentially accentuating the lack of benefit observed," said the JAMA paper.
Sildenafil and other drugs like it -- known as phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors -- are used to treat erectile dysfunction and high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, but are not labeled for heart failure.
However, some clinicians may be prescribing them for their heart failure patients because some smaller studies on humans and preliminary animal studies had suggested a benefit.
The latest study results "should discourage this practice, particularly considering the high cost of the drug," Redfield said in a statement.
